Why moral piety is a good thing..
We live in the times of Kali- as such, our power of morality and piety should be at its peak, but many postmodern people think it better to succumb to the vicious demon and his terrible influence. Why is it that some of us don’t regret fighting back, whereas most of us just give in without a fight. We all know that the monster Kali is really powerful, but so is the name of Hari. Legend has it that one can get rid of the evil influence of Kali just by chanting the names of Ram, Krishna or Hari. Tough times call for tough measures but it is really not that difficult to remember and take refuge under the names of Ram or Krishnaji.
The best example of Bhakti is that of Prahlad who was an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu- but his evil demonic father had warned him not to chant the name of Hari ever, but Prahlad could not follow that command of his father’s so his father cursed him with death- something that Prahlad didn’t care to worry about because he had utmost faith in his Lord Hari. And the Lord didn’t disappoint him- he emerged out of a pillar in the form of a terrible and terrific lion, Narsimha Bhagwan and tore Hiranyakashipu apart physically. Needless to say, Prahlad was saved and Shivji took up the form of the gigantic Shahlabh reincarnation just to quell the anger and influence of Lord Narasimhan- the lion headed deity who is very famous as one of the divine reincarnations of Lord Vishnu.
You don’t have to be as committed and obsessed as Prahlad, but even a little bit of piety will save your soul almost literally. You have to keep reminding yourself that morality and piety are really extremely important traits to develop in your Bhakti.
Devotion, fearing God, being moral, practicing chastity and charity, being egoless, respecting women and children, helping the feeble and old and paying the poor are some deeds that you should follow ardently.
Most devout and theistic Hindus always pray to and propitiate Laxmi Devi and Ganpati before they start off any fiscal activity religiously. There is no reason to feel ashamed or embarrassed when it comes to practicing theism or being polytheistic. This is our gift to the world and we should feel proud of it.
